3v3 Tournament Rules

Tournament Format

All teams will play 4 games.


  • Groups of 3 will play each team twice. Standings will be determined by record.
  • Groups of 4 will play each team once, Then #1 will play #2 for first and second place, #3 will play #4 for third and fourth place.  
  • Groups of 5 will play each team once. Standings will be determined by record.


Ties will be determined by head to head record, then point differential.


Ball size

  • 6th Grade and under: 28.5” ball.
  • 7th Grade and over: 29.5” ball. 

game rules

  • Games will be played on a half-court.
  • There are no time-outs.
  • Games are nine (9) minutes long. (7 minute running clock with a final 2 minute running clock)
  • Clear 3-point line on every change of possession (air ball, steal, etc). One foot over the 3-point line to clear.
  • If you don’t clear the 3-point line and shoot; ball goes out of bounds to opposite team. 
  • Possession alternates after each basket. 
  • All dead balls and possession changes after a made basket will be taken out of bounds at the top of the "in-bounds" line which will be clearly marked between the 3-point line and half court line. 
  • Teams will have 10 seconds after a basket is made to inbound the ball.
  • Ball must be taken out above the in-bounds line or it is considered an “invalid inbounding of the ball.” For HS and older, it is considered a turnover; ball to defensive team. 

Starting the game

Winner of a coin flip will have possession of the ball first.

substitutions

Substitutions may be made at any dead ball and after any made basket. Players must enter and exit the game from next to the scoreboard on their team side when the ref signals for them.  No substitutions in the last 30 seconds of the game unless for injured player. 

scoring / fouls

Two points per basket; three points for baskets beyond the 3-pt arc.


SHOOTING FOULS: 

  • Missed Basket - Awarded the basket. Ball to defensive team.
  • Made basket - Awarded the basket plus one point. Ball to defensive team. 

NON-SHOOTING FOULS: 

  • Ball out of bounds to opposite team.


After the seven minute mark, the ball will change possession. Points will be awarded in the final 2 minutes for non-shooting defensive fouls as follows:

  • If the offensive team is ahead, they are awarded one point. Ball to defensive team.
  • If the offensive team is tied or behind they are awarded two points.  Ball to defensive team.
  • Offensive foul is change of possession. (No points) 

technical fouls

UNSPORTSMAN-LIKE CONDUCT OR TAUNTING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.  It is the discretion of the referee to assess technical fouls (two points and ball to same team) for taunting, flagrant fouls or any form of unsportsmanlike conduct (e.g., excessive fouling, intentional delay of game). Any player or coach receiving two technical fouls in a game is suspended for a minimum one game and may be suspended for the remainder of the tournament. 

winning the game

Games tied at the end of regulation will be completed using a 1 minute run-time overtime period. The same rules apply as the final 2 minutes of the game.  Should it go into 3 OTs, the first team to score wins.
